New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislature party meeting in Dehradun on Friday elected Trivendra Singh Rawat as its leader in Uttarakhand, ending the suspense over the choice of chief minister of the hilly state.
Rawat is elected from the Doiwala seat, and is currently the convener of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship programme for Ganga cleanup, the ‘Namami Gange’.
A former Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) pracharak, Rawat is considered close to Modi and BJP president Amit Shah.
Rawat will take the oath of office on Saturday. PM Modi and Shah are scheduled to attend the event.
The BJP has won 57 of Uttarakhand’s 70 seats ending the five year rule of the Congress led by Harish Rawat.
